Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy – Why Is It Done?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the large intestine (colon and rectum) using a thin, flexible camera.

It is commonly done to:

  • Detect polyps, ulcers, inflammation, or tumors
  • Investigate blood in the stool or unexplained bleeding
  • Find the cause of persistent abdominal pain or changes in bowel habits
  • Diagnose conditions such as colitis and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Screen for colorectal cancer, especially in people at increased risk

Early detection through colonoscopy can help prevent serious bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.
